Independence Day

Writer: Theresa BaxterTheresa Baxter

We’ve lost the sense of liberty

Now doled out like a prize

Kept in reserve and rationed

Brashly politicized

It is no more a world for all

It’s for a privileged few

Turning us subordinate

Not owed what we are due

One cannot say it’s you or me

It can’t be gain or loss

Autonomy is sacrosanct

Secured at any cost

Give me freedom, or give me death

Is oft a battle cry

But if you take my freedom

Is it that I’m meant to die?

But we will not die or be destroyed

You will not drown desire

You’ve brought a gavel to the fight

You’ve stoked an untold fire

We’ll take back independence day

Not cowed nor underserved

You’ve written not my elegy

I’ll live as I deserve!
