The Dress

Illustration of "Portrait of Mrs. Robert Harrison" by the artist John Singer Sargent

She carried herself well

But not with haughtiness

Such elegance was on display

In an extraordinary dress

This garment seems so daring

Could snatch your breath away

A dream of contradiction made

Of red, sheer white and grey

The splendour of the raiment

Diaphanous yet barbed

With swan-like clasped high neck

Such bliss to be so garbed

Her beauty undeniable

In portrait that stopped presses

It indelibly captures the

Most memorable of dresses

So avant-garde in confidence

So game to cause distemper

A woman dressed in eminence

Will always be remembered!
