Last Ditch Bug Bite

Sitting on the open porch

Lit up by a buzzing torch

Cool night is the mark of fall

I don’t mind, I have a shawl

Slow digesting, after meal

I am surprised by what I feel

Sharp prick on the back of neck

I slap at it surprised as heck

Soon I see that tell-tale shape

A gnat that thinks it can escape

Last ditch bug bite, how annoying

Interrupts night I’m enjoying

For meaty limbs I know it’s wishin’

In the end, a futile mission

May it drink until it’s full

Nearing the inevitable

Winter’s coming, my tiresome friend

And with it, your most welcomed end…
