A good friend, as a rule, is kind
But also strong when needs to be
A bastion of sincerity
With glance or nod and gentle word
Yet needs not always to be heard
A presence felt, just being there
That shows how much they really care
If shoulders bear a weight unseen
Sometimes bowed, still sharp and keen
A friend will offer reinforcement
Assistance and encouragement
In times of trouble, or in gladness
A lifeline in those times of sadness
Forged long ago or newly made
A contract that need not be paid
Devotion that is born of chance
Benefits more than it grants
Tend friendships well, keep in good health
They mean as much as life itself!
