Rescue Me

Writer's picture: Theresa BaxterTheresa Baxter

We of a most prideful self inflict the greatest wound

As species unaware of faults, with nature out of tune

The arrogance that has us take up beings here and there

Then if or when they do displease, discard without a care

Majority I hope can see the folly of our ways

Faithfulness that always leaves may one day learn to stay

Appreciate that every life no matter what its form

From fanciest of creatures to the lowliest of worm

Has purpose and a right to be, left to its own devices

Autonomy and freedom is a gift that’s marked as priceless

But should you take into your hearth and lord control above

Be tempered with acknowledgement the debt you owe is love

No animal has asked to be born into yoke and chains

But if compelled to harbour so, we must do it no pain

Tis thought of man, the Golden Rule, and not a holy scroll

Adherence to this lesson should be made our only goal

Plumb very depths of soul and only act with kindfulness

Know caring for another’s life requires mindfulness

Swear I will take most serious responsibility

That rescued one who stole my heart has come to rescue me…
