The Hyena

Writer: Theresa BaxterTheresa Baxter

This beast is not a smirking matter

When stalking grazers they will scatter

From zebra, wildebeest, giraffe

Their blood will chill at sound of laugh

This animal can hit a nerve

With bad rap that they don’t deserve

Maligned hyena needs stature boost

They’re not dogs but “souped-up” mongoose!

Hunter more than scavenger

They rank high on the smartness curve

Their skills as moms, superior

They own the African interior

Known mostly for that haunting giggle

In abandoned burrows they will wriggle

A gender-bending animal

Their complex packs are female-ruled

Misunderstood, misrepresented

I think they should be more respected

So to hyenas, let’s be kind

Research some facts and you will find

I think you’ll like them more and more

This big-brained, girl-boss carnivore!!
